Charcoal vs Graphite | What is better?

  


Graphite and charcoal are two of the most user-friendly media for drawing. They not only permit expressive lines but also aid in rendering values through mixing. Both charcoal and graphite have a lengthy history of the artistic application when it comes to drawing.

Graphite



Modern pencils' core, or "lead," is mostly made of graphite, a kind of carbon, and a binder like clay.

Fun fact: Although the pencil core is frequently referred to as "lead," actual lead was never utilized for writing. Since graphite was once mistakenly believed to be a form of lead, the pencil core is actually referred to as the "lead." Pros & Cons of Graphite:

Pros:

  • It is more portable than graphite since it is less messy to work with and doesn't smudge as easily.

Cons:

  • Insufficient for large drawings

Charcoal



Charcoal is a kind of carbon, just like graphite.

But to make charcoal, wood must be burned until the resulting substance has the right consistency for drawing.

The consistency of charcoal can be light, medium, or hard. The hardest charcoal will provide the lightest values, while the darkest charcoal will produce the darkest values, similar to graphite.

Additionally, charcoal is available as sticks and pencils. The sticks and pencils are created from a core of clay or resin mixed with powdered charcoal.

You can get a wide variety of values from the whitest white of the paper to incredibly dark places because this medium tends to be darker than even the darkest graphite.

Charcoal is graded from HB to 6B, which is a narrower range than that of graphite.

The pencils are completely optional, and many artists prefer charcoal sticks because you can flip the sticks around to create a variety of styles and line thicknesses.

Charcoal that is softer spreads and blends more easily, providing you excellent, smooth coverage similar to oil paint, making it easier to work with.

Additionally, softer charcoal is easier to erase, making it more forgiving and appropriate for novices.

The best charcoal is a soft vine or willow charcoal, which is essentially just burned twigs with no binder at all and is not at all compact.

On more textured paper, charcoal definitely performs better. Charcoal works well for larger drawings as well because you can lay a stick on its side to cover a wide area at once.

By lifting a small amount of the charcoal with a kneaded eraser, it is simple to add highlights and lighten a value.

However, working with charcoal on the go is difficult and quite dirty.
